Consumer information: Movisse

What is Movisse Used For?

  • Movisse is a progestin-only oral contraceptive (also known as the "mini-pill") used to prevent pregnancy.
  • It contains norethindrone as the active ingredient, without the addition of estrogen.

How Does Movisse Work?

  • Movisse prevents pregnancy through multiple mechanisms:
    1. Prevents ovulation (releasing an egg from the ovary) in about half of the cycles.
    2. Thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg.
    3. Alters the uterine lining, making implantation of a fertilized egg less likely.

Effectiveness:

  • Perfect use: When taken exactly as directed, the progestin-only pill is highly effective at preventing pregnancy.
  • Typical use: With late or missed pills, the effectiveness decreases. About 1 in 20 women using progestin-only pills may become pregnant within the first year of use.
  • Movisse does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Who Should Not Use Movisse?

  • Movisse should not be used if you:
    • Are pregnant or suspect pregnancy.
    • Have active liver disease or a history of benign or malignant liver tumors.
    • Have or suspect breast cancer.
    • Have undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding.
    • Are allergic to any components of the product.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Ectopic pregnancy risk is slightly higher with progestin-only pills. Women should watch for symptoms of ectopic pregnancy if they become pregnant while on the pill.
  • The incidence of ovarian cysts may be slightly increased due to delayed follicular atresia.
  • There is a slight increase in the risk of developing breast cancer, especially for long-term users of oral contraceptives. Women should regularly perform breast self-exams and report any changes to their doctor.
  • Smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects, especially in women over 35.

Possible Side Effects:

  • Common side effects include:
    • Menstrual irregularities, including frequent or irregular bleeding, amenorrhea (absence of periods), and spotting.
    • Headaches, nausea, dizziness, and breast tenderness.
    • Weight gain and acne may occur in some users.
  • Serious side effects (less common) include:
    • Breast cancer and ovarian cysts.
    • Hepatic neoplasia (liver tumors).

When to Start Movisse:

  1. Starting after a period:
    • Begin taking Movisse on Day 1 to Day 5 of your menstrual cycle. This will provide immediate contraceptive protection.
    • If starting after Day 5, use backup contraception for the next 48 hours.
  2. After childbirth:
    • For fully breastfeeding women, Movisse can be started 6 weeks after delivery.
    • For partially breastfeeding women, Movisse can be started 3 weeks after delivery.
  3. After miscarriage or abortion:
    • You can start Movisse immediately after a miscarriage or abortion.

Missed Pills:

  • If you are more than 3 hours late in taking your pill:
    • Take the missed pill as soon as you remember.
    • Continue with the next pill at the usual time (you may need to take two pills in one day).
    • Use backup contraception (e.g., condoms) for the next 48 hours.
  • If you miss more than one pill: Talk to your healthcare provider about alternative contraceptive methods.

Other Considerations:

  • Movisse should be taken at the same time every day to ensure maximum effectiveness.
  • If you experience vomiting or severe diarrhea within 3-4 hours of taking a pill, take another pill as soon as possible and use backup contraception for the next 48 hours.
  • Breastfeeding: Movisse is generally safe for breastfeeding women and does not typically affect breast milk production, although isolated cases of decreased milk production have been reported.

Storage Information:

  • Store Movisse between 15°C and 30°C in its original packaging until time of use.
